This page provides answers to common questions about participating in the Health Insight Pilot Study and summarises how the collected information will help researchers. Click on the items below to learn more.

Selected Bupa private health insurance policy holders are invited to participate in the Health Insight Pilot Study to help answer important questions about the health of people who hold private health insurance – a group for whom there is currently only incomplete information.

The results of the Pilot Study will be used to gain a preliminary understanding of ‘person-centred outcomes’, which refers to issues that have been shown to matter most to community members. These include physical disability, pain, quality of life, mental health, connecting with friends and family, and participating in work and community activities. We will also use information from this research study to understand whether it is possible to do a large study among people with private health insurance to improve health and health services in Australia.

If a full-scale Health Insight Study proceeds, participants in the Pilot Study will be given the opportunity to be involved at that time. This would mean seeking your consent to include your data from the Pilot Study in the larger Health Insight Study. Your involvement would be entirely voluntary.

If you decide to take part in the research study, we ask you to read the information sheets, complete two consent forms and complete a single questionnaire.

If you complete the questionnaire on paper, you will need to return completed consent forms and questionnaire in the provided reply-paid envelope.

You will only be contacted once to seek your consent to participate.

The questionnaire asks questions on a range of health and health care topics. These include information about whether you have health conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, cancer and heart disease. We will ask about mental health, disability, quality of life and social engagement. The questionnaire will also ask about your health behaviours such as visiting health practitioners, smoking and physical activity. You will also be asked to provide some basic personal information including contact details, date of birth, cultural background and education.

The broad topics covered in the questionnaire are listed below:

  • Personal information (including age, background, and social characteristics)
  • Health and health care experiences
  • Personal health and health risk behaviours
  • Family and family health

If you have been invited to participate in the Health Insight Pilot Study, you have been selected as a Bupa health insurance policy holder aged 18 years or over living in New South Wales or South Australia.

Participation in the Health Insight Pilot Study is voluntary. You do not have to participate if you do not want to.

If you have been invited to participate in the Health Insight Pilot Study but do not wish to participate, you can either not respond or you can contact the researchers to let them know you do not consent to participation.

If you do consent to participate, you may withdraw at any time. You can do so by completing the ‘Withdrawal of Consent Form’ provided in the invitation package. Alternatively, you can ring the research team on 1300 163 426 and tell them you no longer want to participate. If you decide to leave the research study, the researchers will destroy any information that has already been collected and no additional information will be collected from you. Your decision not to participate or to withdraw from the study will not affect your relationship with the Sax Institute, Bupa or the Bupa Health Foundation.

The information you provide is personal information for the purposes of the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (NSW). You have the right of access to personal information held about you by the University, the right to request correction and amendment of it, and the right to make a compliant about a breach of the Information Protection Principles as contained in the PPIP Act.

Unfortunately, due to Pilot Study methods, we are unable to accept responses from people who have not been directly invited to participate in the Health Insight Pilot Study.

Use of my responses

Submission of the online questionnaire is an indication of your consent. By clicking the ‘I agree to participate’ button you are providing your permission for the research team to collect and use information about you for the research study. Your data will be kept for a period of 7 years after the project’s completion. We will store information about you that you provide in response to the questionnaire in a non-identifiable format at the Sax Institute. Your information will only be used for health and health services research. Information collected for this research project may be made available to other research projects in non-identifiable form only.

If you choose to provide consent to have your information stored in the Health Insight Study Databank, the Sax Institute would store your identifying personal information in a separate database that is not accessible to the staff who have access to your non-identifiable questionnaire responses. Please see the separate Data Banking Consent Form for further details.
